Editor’s Note: This op-ed originally appeared in the March 2020 issue of the Biscayne Times. Big reports don’t mobilize residents to take action. This statement seems obvious, but we at The Miami Foundation took some time to arrive at this conclusion. Since 1967, our foundation has worked with more than 1000 individuals, families, and organizations to invest in their causes … Read More
MY MIAMI STORY CONVERSATIONS ARE WORKING … HERE’S HOW
How’d you get to Miami? What keeps you here? What do you care about in our community? What can we do to improve it? Simple questions that give a window into your life in Miami-Dade and connection to this place we call home. Every one of our 2.7 million residents has a Miami story. When we come together and share them with each other, a unified narrative emerges about our true experiences and what matters to us. That’s what My Miami Story conversations are all about. They help us go beyond the facts and figures about Greater Miami – like employment rates and funding for public schools – to reveal what everyday life is like for local residents. These small gatherings hosted over lunches, dinners and cafecito breaks help us connect to each other, spark ideas and think about what we all can do to make this community better.
HERE’S YOUR CHALLENGE, MIAMI – RAUL MOAS’ STORY
I am a son of Miami—the good, the bad and the loud. Miami is and will always be home. This city holds the stories of family histories filled with struggle and eventual success. Having been raised in a Cuban-American household, family and faith are central pillars in my life. I have witnessed firsthand the pain of exile, the importance of a quality education, and the rewards of hard work and determination.
WHY A MY MIAMI STORY SURVEY, AND WAYS TO ADD YOUR VOICE

It was another incredible day of community reflection with residents deciding to take action around issues they care about, whether it’s making transit more accessible for residents, creating safer, more affordable neighborhoods or making sure kids are reading at an early age.

Life for Miami-Dade County’s 2.7 million residents can be easily categorized by economic indicators — the affordability of homes compared to average salaries, the number of good jobs paying decent wages, and the funding for public schools compared to other major cities. But how do these statistics connect to what residents experience in their daily lives? The answer is found … Read More

“I signed up to host a My Miami Story conversation because I’m passionate about Miami’s food community and fostering the next generation of inclusive and diverse restaurant leaders. I’m grateful to The Miami Foundation for providing a platform where we can exchange ideas, discuss challenges and offer solutions.
“For my conversation, the idea is to gather local chefs and restaurateurs—industry veterans and up-and-coming talent—to talk about how we can work together to lift Miami’s food culture to the next level and do so in a way that prominently includes women and people of color.”
