Long before topics like sea-level rise were on Greater Miami\u2019s radar, Lila believed it was important to protect our natural resources sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of her financial advisor, Lila set up a charitable Fund at The Miami Foundation to support local environmental initiatives. Her passion for giving back also extended to children and education. Today, her forward-thinking enables us to support these causes and organizations working on the ground, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/beavoice.org\/en\/\">Voices for Children Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/overtownyouth.org\/\">Overtown Youth Center<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamichildrensinitiative.org\/\">Miami Children\u2019s Initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through our <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/grantprograms\/\">Community Grants<\/a> program, the Foundation honors more than 100 donors, like Lila, who have created permanently endowed funds with the Foundation. Using the <a href=\"http:\/\/ourmiami.org\">Our Miami Report<\/a> in tandem with Fundholders\u2019 intent, we connect donors\u2019 philanthropic legacies with issues currently impacting Greater Miami\u2019s quality of life. Because of them, we\u2019re able to invest more than $1 million annually in solutions that improve the health, well-being and livelihood of local residents.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;18580&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]While Lila\u2019s passion for giving back started with the natural world, Staci\u2019s, another Community Grants donor, started with her mother, a breast cancer survivor. Staci pushed for Florida to have a license plate for breast cancer research. From there, she began working with <a href=\"https:\/\/laurenskids.org\/\">Lauren\u2019s Kids<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridaheart.org\/\">Florida Heart<\/a>\u00a0 and other nonprofits. But she still desired to do more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really wanted to make some kind of an impact on children,\u201d she said. \u201cI know there is the well-being of youth and children category in the Community Grants, and I thought that would be a good idea to put the Fund to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By setting up a Fund, Staci knows her assets will reach different organizations, causes and missions, now and for future generations. \u201cI felt strongly that I wanted to touch and make some kind of an impact and help several causes,\u201d Staci shared. \u201cI find children are the most innocent and most vulnerable, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danadegreff.com\"><em>Dana DeGreff<\/em><\/a><em> is an MFA candidate in fiction at the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umiami.edu\"><em>University of Miami<\/em><\/a><em> and founder and executive director of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pageslayers.com\/\"><em>PageSlayers Summer Camp<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After graduating from the University of Miami with a degree in business, Lila Dickerson launched a career in real estate investment while also cultivating a deep respect for the environment around her.
