She is also president and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grameenamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grameen America<\/a>, a nonprofit that provides microloans to low-income women entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at The Miami Foundation\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/220433024651005\/photos\/?tab=album&amp;album_id=2589187424442208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Civic Leadership Breakfast<\/a> on Tuesday at Miami Dade College, Andrea described meeting women who had gone from sleeping on trains to owning hair salons and running their own bakeries. But, she emphasized, it wasn&#8217;t just the extra capital that made the difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe peers, the support, the confidence and the training ends up being life-changing,\u201d Andrea said. \u201cThe money is a small piece of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2019 Civic Leadership Breakfast\" width=\"1184\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YP7Lh48KFK8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Andrea was in conversation with WLRN reporter <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/WLRN-JOURNALIST-NADEGE-GREEN-IS-THE-FIRST-HAITIAN-AMERICAN-HONORED-WITH-THE-RUTH-SHACK-LEADERSHIP-AWARD\/\">Nadege Green<\/a>, who received the 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/civic-leadership\/ruth-shack-leadership-award\/\">Ruth Shack Leadership Award<\/a> for her reporting on social justice issues in Miami. They spoke in front of a crowd of more than 100 people, many of whom were past, present \u2013 and future \u2013 participants and supporters of the Foundation\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/civic-leadership\/\">Civic Leadership<\/a> programs such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/fellows\/\">Miami Fellows<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/civic-leadership\/leaders\/\">Miami Leaders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of developing leaders who support each other was an overarching theme: the Foundation\u2019s president and CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/staff\/javier-alberto-soto-biography\/\">Javier Alberto Soto<\/a> described it as some of the Foundation\u2019s most important work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout new leaders who are passionate, values-driven and ready to lead this place, Miami\u2019s resilience will be seriously weakened,\u201d he said. \u201cYes, resilience is about climate change. Yes, resilience is about economic prosperity. Yes, resilience is about disaster recovery. But I think it\u2019s also about building a leadership pipeline that\u2019s led by passionate, creative people who will help keep moving our community forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An emerging local leader who\u2019s doing just that is <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/guitars-over-guns-chad-bernstein-receives-2019-ruth-shack-award\/\">Chad Bernstein<\/a>, who accepted the 2019 Ruth Shack Leadership Award at the event. Chad was recognized for his work with Guitars Over Guns, a nonprofit that has reached more than 3,000 students in Miami and Chicago with mentorship and music education. In his remarks, Chad said one way he strives to empower students is by giving them the sense that someone believes in them \u2013 just as Miami believed in him when he was developing the organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something really special about having someone who not only helps you find your work-life balance but also your life\u2019s work balance,\u201d Chad said. He thanked his wife, his staff, other graduates of the Foundation\u2019s Miami Fellows program and the Foundation\u2019s president emeritus <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/ruth-shack-why-we-need-the-miami-fellows\/\">Ruth Shack<\/a>, whom he described as \u201can unapologetic champion of Miami.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a beneficiary of everything you\u2019ve built,\u201d Chad said of Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>Guests also heard from Charles Hokanson, a senior vice president with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helios.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helios Education Foundation<\/a>, which works on improving access to postsecondary education and was a generous supporter of the morning\u2019s event. Both Andrea and Charles emphasized that developing strong leaders strengthens communities.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea noted that, in this respect, Miami is among the most successful of Grameen\u2019s sites; during the 15 months that Grameen has been active in the city, about a thousand local women entrepreneurs have become members. Collectively, they have a 100% loan repayment rate, the best in the country. The Miami Foundation was among the <a href=\"http:\/\/3.139.175.126\/grameen-america-opens-branch-in-miami\/\">Grameen Miami branch&#8217;s<\/a> earliest supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing like the entrepreneurship spirit in Miami,\u201d Andrea remarked. She added that part of what buoys this spirit is, \u201cthe philanthropic and civic leadership desire to change not just Miami, but the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of the conversation between Andrea and Nadege focused on empowering women, both in boardrooms and in low-income communities. Before she began working in the nonprofit sector, Andrea was CEO of the skin care company Avon; she said hearing about the \u201cAvon ladies\u201d who sold cosmetics to put their kids through school was one of the first times she realized the far-reaching impact of providing financial opportunities to women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a woman earns a dollar, that money goes to children and to the community,\u201d Andrea said. She added that equality of opportunity for women and men, particularly equal access to leadership roles, \u201cis not just a business case, not just an equal right, but it\u2019s better for America.
