Janell Kaplan<\/strong> is The Miami Foundation’s outgoing Vice President of Philanthropy. She joined our team as an intern in 2010 and has been a pillar of The Foundation ever since. In her new role, Janell will continue her work supporting charitable giving and the philanthropic sector.<\/p>\n

\"Janell<\/p>\n

In my fourteen years at the Foundation, I have grown from an intern to Vice President of Philanthropy. As I look back on this journey and prepare for my next adventure, I am thinking a lot about the role of sustainability<\/strong> in our work and the responsibility we all share in building a Greater Miami for everyone.<\/p>\n

Creating a Greater Miami where everyone can thrive will take time and effort. It is important that we consider what our community needs to continue moving forward and embrace partnerships that maintain this momentum. When we hear the word \u201csustainability\u201d, we most often think about the environment, which is a vital asset to prioritize for our community. However, with sustainability being a core value here at The Foundation, I\u2019d like to propose that we all think about sustainability more broadly. More specifically, what do we need to sustain our community’s progress<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

These are just a few of the answers that I have discovered during my tenure:<\/h2>\n

We need bold givers.<\/h3>\n

Anyone can be a philanthropist. There is a spirit of generosity in all of us, and when nurtured and engaged, it becomes easier to identify causes to support, becoming a powerful force for good. Giving, regardless of the amount, matters. I’ve been fortunate to hear inspiring and personal stories of “why I give” over the years. I hope you will discover your philanthropic purpose and continue giving, time and again.<\/p>\n

We need more visionary leaders.<\/h3>\n

For The Foundation to be here forever addressing the needs of today and tomorrow, we must garner the trust of visionary Miamians who look beyond the present to create lasting legacies. The Foundation is proud to steward hundreds of legacy funds, which name The Miami Foundation in their fundholders’ estate plans. These legacy funds can then invest in education, arts, public health, and environmental solutions for years to come.<\/p>\n

We need to sustain our nonprofits.<\/h3>\n

We have thousands of nonprofits in our community doing vital work year-round to address ever-changing needs, but they cannot do it alone. Support must come in the form of more Miamians donating time and funds to local nonprofits. As we gear up for Give Miami Day this fall, I am reminded of the tremendous growth and impact of this day. In 2012, $1 million was raised for 300 nonprofits. It was the first large-scale, unrestricted giving campaign that our community had seen. Last year, nearly 50,000 households gave over $34 million to over 1,000 nonprofits! Just imagine what Miami could become if instead of 50,000 households participating in Give Miami Day, we saw 200,000 households giving in a single day! The impact for nonprofits would be transformational \u2013 and the trust everlasting.<\/p>\n

We need collective action.<\/h3>\n

When we work together, we can create significant change. I have witnessed the power of collective action and each time I am overwhelmed by the deep commitment of those that call Miami home. Whether its neighbors helping one another during the active storm seasons or cross-sector leaders and philanthropists coming together to provide internet for more than 100,000 families during the pandemic, large challenges feel easier to overcome when we stand together.<\/p>\n

We need to nourish our whole selves.<\/h3>\n

To sustain a community, its residents need to have regular opportunities to focus on their physical, mental, and emotional strength. When this is achieved, we are all more capable of being a source of strength for each other. As we think about the roadmap to building a thriving Miami over the next decade, I hope we will balance the urgency we feel to make progress with a need to nourish and extend love to all members of our community.<\/p>\n

I am grateful for you and all the amazing partners I have worked with during my tenure. When I arrived downtown on the first day of my internship, I never could have imagined the incredible opportunities and experiences that awaited me.<\/p>\n

As I look to what is next for our community foundation, I am encouraged by our collective commitment to place and the love I see poured out daily to Greater Miami by so many. At the same time, I also know that there is still so much more work to be done. We are on a positive path of progress, but we still have an uphill journey to make. My hope for this community is that it will sustain itself. May we lean on the fuel of bold giving, visionary leadership, and collective action to keep us going, and may we continue to nourish ourselves and support our nonprofits along the way.
